Die Basis für die Bewertung von Lötstellen im Rahmen der visuellen Prüfung elektronischer Baugruppen sind die IPC-Richtlinien IPC-A-610F (Abnahmekriterien für elektronische Baugruppen) und IPC-J-STD-001F (Anforderungen an gelötete elektrische und elektronische Baugruppen).
Auf der Grundlage der genannten IPC-Richtlinien wurde vom IPC das Trainingshandbuch und Nachschlagewerk IPC-DRM-PTH-F publiziert.
Es zeigt visuelle Beispiele für zulässige und fehlerhafte Lötstellen von THT-Lötstellen (THT = Through-Hole-Technology), für den praktischen Eiinsatz am Prüfplatz gedacht.

Das Trainingshandbuch und Nachschlagewerk für die Bewertung von elektronischen Baugruppen mit Oberflächenmontage (SMT = Surface Mount Technology) zeigt visuelle Abnahmekriterien von SMT-Lötstellen der drei bekanntesten SMT-Anschlusstypen:
- rechteckige Bauteilanschlüsse
- J-förmige Bauteilanschlüsse
- Gull-Wing-Bauteilanschlüsse
Grundlage für die Bewertung sind die IPC-A-610 Rev. F (Abnahmekriterien für elektronische Baugruppen) und die IPC-J-STD-001 Rev. F (Anforderungen an gelötete elektrische und elektronische Baugruppen).
Es werden in dem Trainingshandbuch und Nachschlagewerk die minimalen und maximalen Abnahmekriterien bezogen auf die Produktklassen 1 bis 3 anschaulich in bildlich, schematischen Darstellungen und in einer Vielzahl von Farbfotos der anzustrebenden aber auch als fehlerhaft einzustufende Lötstellenqualitäten zeigt und beschrieben.
