Obsolescence occurs when components or materials are no longer available. If these are needed to manufacture a product, this quickly becomes a problem. This is especially true in applications that require complex qualifications, even in the event of changes. Obsolescence usually occurs unexpectedly and a great deal of effort is put into finding a solution in a short period of time, i.e., a purely reactive approach.
Obsolescence management leads to lower obsolescence risks, but when obsolescence does occur, the impact is less severe. This is achieved through a standardized process consisting of proactive and reactive components.
The seminar explains the reasons for and effects of obsolescence and introduces obsolescence management. The basic methodologies are presented and introduced into the various parts of the obsolescence management process acccording to IEC 62402.
The seminar concludes with concrete suggestions for electronics design and tips for everyday practice.
Even simple measures can prevent obsolescence and reduce its effects. However, obsolescence management that is firmly established within the company is much more effective.
