FED talks | AI and Electronics - Trends, Challenges, and Urgent Opportunities
Alexander Gerfer - CTO WÜRTH Elektronik eiSos GmbH und Co KG

AI promises huge efficiency gains, but electronics design remains a challenge. Conventional tools struggle with schematics and physical understanding. Still, AI can already support designers through automated cross-referencing, data sheet analysis, structured data handling, and AI agents. Yet AI’s energy and resource demand is critical: training models consumes vast power, while chip lifecycles - from rare mineral extraction to early obsolescence - add hidden costs. LCA shows the true footprint is far beyond runtime watts. Solutions lie in reimagined hardware: smarter power delivery, silicon-based magnetics, vertical architectures, efficient passives, and specialized accelerators. The question is urgent: will AI become a burden or a breakthrough?
